Ujjain

Situated on the banks of the sacred river Shipra, Ujjain, which is the modern name of Ujjaini, abounds in temples, with hoary traditions. The most prominent of them all is Mahakaleshwar which houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India, where Bhasma Aarti is a daily ritual that you must attend. In order to attend the aarti, make sure to follow the dress code if you wish to go inside the sanctum and participate in Abhishek.

Some more temples to visit in Ujjain are Harsiddhi temple, Gopal temple, Chintaman Ganesh temple, Chardham temple, Mangalnath temple, Bada Ganpati temple, Navagraha temple and Kal Bhairav temple. At Kal Bhairav temple, the devotees offer liquor to the deity as Prashad.The world's largest religious gathering, Simhastha (Kumbh Mela), is held on the banks of the Shipra River once every 12 years which is the maximum visited place in Ujjain.
