Ujjain opens the journey. Old temples, the Bhasma Aarti at dawn, and the lamps on Ram Ghat at dusk. Maheshwar the riverside fort town of Ahilyabai Holkar has the handloom weavers and the quietest ghats on the Narmada. Indore closes the trip with Sarafa Bazaar, where the jewellery market shuts down at night and the food stalls take over.
The pace is unhurried. The trip is built for travellers who would rather take their time than tick off a list.
The first evening at the temple, when the lamps come on and the river goes quiet.
You will be received at Indore and driven to Ujjain (about 55 km). After check-in, the day begins with the Sandhya Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. The Mahalok Corridor leads up to the temple and is worth walking slowly.
In the evening, on to Ram Ghat. The oil lamps come out, the chanting begins, and the Shipra slows down. Dinner is a traditional Ujjain thali. For those who would like to attend the Bhasma Aarti at 4:00 AM, the booking can be made in advance.

A full day of old temples, an old observatory, and the bazaars after dark.
After breakfast, a round of the city's most loved temples Kal Bhairav (with its old liquor-offering tradition), Mangalnath, Chintamani Ganesh, and Harsiddhi. Vedh Shala next: an early eighteenth-century observatory, still in use for traditional sky readings.
Evening free to walk the temple bazaars or return to the ghats.

From temple town to a city that comes alive at night.
Drive to Indore (about 1.5 hours). Rajwada Palace, a seven-storey building with Maratha, Mughal, and French touches. Kaanch Mandir a Jain temple finished entirely in glass and mirror, and quite something from the inside.
The evening belongs to Sarafa Bazaar. The jewellery shops close. The food stalls come out. Joshi Dahi Bada, malpua, fire paan.

A queen's town on the Narmada, with weavers still at the looms.
A day trip to Maheshwar (about 2.5 hours). Ahilya Fort and its temple complex. The Narmada ghats below the fort walls, where the river goes about its business as it has for centuries. Rehwa Society Maheshwari sarees, still woven on the same pit looms, in patterns from the eighteenth century.
Back to Indore for the night.
